Our Proven Process

Whatever the specific application may be, Dimensional Engineering will follow the same general process in addressing your design and production engineering needs:

  • Define the scope of work. It is critically important that both your engineering team and Dimensional Engineering remain on the same page as to the purpose of the project and the expected results and deliverables at every stage of the project.
  • Acquire dimensional data. We use the latest non-contact laser scanning and laser tracking technology – both hardware and software – to capture the complete machine, tool, modular build, or part design in 3D digital data.
  • Analyze the data. We may, for example, evaluate the tool or part for form, fit, and function. We explore key questions such as: Does the machine, tool, or part meet the latest industry standards? Does it continue to serve your manufacturing process? Can the tool or part itself continue to be manufactured? Does it meet your own updated specifications for performance and quality?
  • Create a CAD model. Dimensional Engineering uses digital data captured in scanning to create a complete 3D model in whatever leading computer-aided design (CAD) software you prefer – Unigraphics, CATIA, SolidWorks, or another. This model provides the basis for continued design modifications, simulation, testing, and refinement. If you request, we can use the CAD model to create 2D engineering drawings of the machine, tool, or part.
  • Check for quality. Dimensional Engineering checks the CAD model against the point cloud data obtained through scanning, as well as the part itself, to be sure the dimensional data accurately captures the part’s surfaces. This is especially crucial on parts having complex, free-flowing surfaces. If we find discrepancies, we adjust the CAD model until even the most complex surfaces are modeled fully and accurately.
  • Trace the project. The complete process is 100% traceable through every stage. No matter the size or depth of the project, it will be documented and archived.
  • Focus on the design issue. Clients often look to Dimensional Engineering for reverse engineering services when they have legacy machines, tools, or parts that need to be preserved, but for which no master models or drawings remain in existence, whether physically or on the computer. Other common applications of our process include inspecting tools and parts for quality, finding and correcting the root causes of mechanical design problems, providing second-party validation and certification of new designs, and digitally archiving master models.
